Inside the classroom
At Heartwood Schoolhouse, our classroom is more than a space—it’s a living, breathing environment where children learn through experience, curiosity, and connection.

Our Approach
We draw inspiration from a blend of Montessori, Waldorf, and Charlotte Mason philosophies. This thoughtful combination allows us to support the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—while honoring each child’s natural pace of development.
-
Montessori guides our emphasis on independence, hands-on learning, and carefully prepared environments.
-
Waldorf influences our rhythm, creativity, and connection to imagination and the seasons.
-
Charlotte Mason brings in rich literature, nature study, and the belief that children learn best through meaningful, living ideas.
Rather than rigid structure, we follow the organic rhythms of nature and the changing seasons. Learning unfolds in a way that feels natural, grounded, and deeply engaging.
Our curriculum
Our curriculum is intentionally designed to be hands-on, experiential, and rooted in the real world. Children learn by doing—touching, building, creating, exploring.
Throughout the year, we explore themes inspired by nature and seasonal changes such as:
-
Wildlife and habitats
-
Homestead rythms
-
Weather and the elements
-
Plants, gardens, and food cycles
-
Local ecosystems and land stewardship
We incorporate:
-
Nature-based science and observation
-
Practical life skills (cooking, crafting, caring for the environment)
-
Art and creative expression
-
Storytelling and rich literature
-
Sensory play and open-ended exploration
Each activity is designed to spark curiosity while building confidence, independence, and a deep respect for the natural world.

What a day looks like
Our days flow with a gentle and predictable rhythm, allowing children to feel both secure and free to explore.
A typical day may include:
-
Arrival & Free Exploration
Children settle in, explore the space, and engage with hands-on materials at their own pace. -
Morning Circle
Songs, seasonal verses, storytelling, and connection as a group. -
Focused Exploration Time
Guided activities, nature-based projects, and hands-on learning tied to our current theme. -
Snack & Practical Life
-
Children participate in preparing food, cleaning up, and caring for their environment.
-
Outdoor Time
A large portion of our day is spent outside-exploring, observing, and learning directly from the natural world in all seasons. -
Lunch Time
Each kid brings their own lunch and have lunch time together. Parents are welcome to join!
Our intention
At Heartwood Schoolhouse, we are not rushing children through academics. We are nurturing a lifelong love of learning, a strong sense of self, and a deep connection to the world around them.
We believe childhood should be filled with wonder, movement, creativity, and meaningful worK.
